Mizoram private hospital slapped with over Rs 43 lakh fine for medical negligence

The Mizoram State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission has imposed a fine of Rs 43, 48,480 to the private hospital for alleged medical negligence.

The New Life Hospital in Aizawl is to pay a fine of Rs 43,48,480 for alleged medical negligence resulting in the tragic demise of a pregnant woman and her child.

As per inputs, the decision came following a case filed by the deceased woman’s husband, Lalduhawma, in 2016 seeking justice for his wife, J Zosangzuali.

The hospital was directed to deposit a sum of Rs 43,48,480, as compensation within 90 days to the commission, in the case of a delay the hospital has to pay interest.

On November 12, 2016, J Zosangzuali was admitted to New Life Hospital in anticipation of childbirth. Despite efforts to induce labor, including medication administration, there was no progress for eight hours. The hospital ceased the medication around 9 pm on the same day.

The same treatment was given from 6:30 am the next day on November 13. However, due to complications, she was transferred to the ICU. Tragically, she gave birth to a stillborn child, and she succumbed to her condition at 4:30 pm the same day.

Her husband, Lalduhawma filed a complaint to the commission alleging that his wife and the baby died due to medical negligence.

Following the incident, the hospital denied the charges.
