After a short stint of less than two years with TMC, former Congress MLA from Chokpot constituency, Lazarus Sangma, has returned to the Congress.

In a ghar wapsi moment, Lazarus Sangma, along with his supporters rejoined the grand old party on Thursday and extended support to Saleng A Sangma, who is the Congress candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Tura seat.

Sangma won the 2018 Meghalaya Assembly elections as a candidate of the Congress party.  Later, in 2022 he joined TMC. He fought the 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections on a TMC ticket but he could not retain the seat. He lost to NPP’s Sengchim N Sangma.

Lazarus was welcomed by Meghalaya Congress Working President, Deborah C Marak and Congress Lok Sabha candidate Saleng A Sangma.

Lazarus Sangma had left the Congress and joined TMC along with 11 others led by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma ahead of the state assembly elections last year.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress nominated former minister Zenith M Sangma as its candidate for the Tura parliamentary seat in south Meghalaya, which is now held by the ruling National People’s Party’s Agatha K. Sangma.
