Meghalaya: Helen Giri bestowed presitigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award

Born on 7 February 1944, Giri has been instrumental in the exponential growth of Khasi traditional music.

Known for her efforts to promote and preserve the Khasi dance form, Helen Giri has been recognised for her contributions with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

She is among the 91 eminent personalities who have been awarded with the presitigious award for the years 2022 and 2023 in the field of performing arts.

Born on 7 February 1944, Giri has been instrumental in the exponential growth of Khasi traditional music.
Her performances as a singer at various State, National, and International levels have garnered widespread recognition.

Furthermore, she has taken initiatives to identify Master Craftsmen skilled in various categories of musical instruments.

Prior to this, Giri was receipient of the Padma Shri for her contribution to the Arts and Culture of Meghalaya in the year 2008.

The Akademi Awards have been conferred since 1952. These honours not only symbolize the highest standard of excellence and achievement, but also recognize sustained individual work and contribution.
