Mandal said that a regional party is the need of the hour in Assam as people are proud of their culture

Is West Goalpara Congress MLA Abdul Rashid Mandal hinting at joining the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP)?

In what may be another blow to the grand old party ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Mandal,
speaking to media today said that a regional party is the need of the hour in Assam as people are proud of their culture.

“The birth of the regional powerhouse AGP was made possible by Congress. The demography of people not covered by BJP and AIUDF, or even Congress will select AGP because it is a regional party. A regional party in the state is needed because Assamese people are proud of their culture,” Mandal said.

He added that as even Shri Krishna could not convert everyone to Hindus and Prophet Muhammad could not convert everyone into Muslims, similiarly everyone will not follow a single party.

It maybe mentioned here that two Congress MLAs – Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das extended their support to the BJP on February 14 . Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Congress MLA from Karimganj North resigned from the post of Working President of the party.

Basanta Das represents the Mangaldai constituency and had served as a minister in the third Tarun Gogoi Cabinet from 2011-16. He won the Mangaldai seat twice, in 2001 and in 2011 in a Congress ticket.

Assam Congress General Secretary, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee had also stepped down from his post on January 13 expressing displeasure with the central leadership.
