Petrol pumps in Manipur shut till Feb 18

First Published: 16th February, 2024 15:26 IST

The retailers threatened further closure of the petrol pumps if any untoward incident occurred during this period

Petrol pumps in and around Imphal are shut till February 18. The fuel retailers decided to keep the gas stations shut to register their protest against extortions.

The dealers had earlier told the media that the state’s law-and-order situation had turned the petrol pumps into soft spots or easy targets resulting in various organisations and miscreants coming and demanding huge sum of money from the petrol pump operators. Now the dealers and the employees fear for their lives and property.

Since the unrest began on May 3, 2023, most of the petrol pumps have been paying the organizations money they have been demanding, but their demands have now become so high that they are unable to pay, some of the dealers said.

Yesterday, as many as 138 members of petrol pumps held an emergency meeting and unanimously decided to keep their businesses closed for 3 days starting today.

They also threatened further closure of the retail outlets if any untoward incident occurred during these 3 days.
