2 dead, several injured, internet suspended after mob of 400 attack SP office in Churachandpur

Two people were killed and over 40 injured in a clash with the security forces as a mob of 300-400 people attacked the office of Churachandpur SP and the mini secretariat complex that houses the DC’s office and residence nearby, last night.
Authorities have temporarily suspended mobile internet service in Churachandpur for next 5 days as a preventive measure.
The incident happened hours after head constable of the district police, Siamlalpaul was suspended for allegedly taking a selfie in a bunker of “armed miscreants” and “village defence volunteers” atop a hill.
The mob pelted stones, vandalised the SP office and torched several vehicles parked inside the SP and DC offices and engaged in other violent activities.
The Manipur police twitted about the incident.
In response, the security forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), used tear gas shells to control the situation, police said.
“There is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for the transmission of images, posts, and video messages inciting the passions of the public, which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the State of Manipur. There is an imminent danger of loss of life and/or damage to public/private property, and widespread disturbances to public tranquilly and communal harmony, as a result of inflammatory material and false rumours that might be transmitted/circulated to the public through social media and messaging services on mobile services, SMS services, and dongle services. In view of volatile law and order situation in Churachandpur district and for reasons cited above, State government decided to temporarily suspension/curbing of mobile internet/data services, internet/data services through VPN in the whole revenue jurisdiction of Churachandpur District for 5 (five) day as preventive and precautionary measure,” the Internet suspension order said.
