CM Sarma said that when it came to resolving border issues, Assam has to play the role of an elder brother.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today took on the opposition in the assembly over the inter-state border issues. Replying to opposition allegations and attacks, CM Sarma lashed out at the previous Congress governments for failing to take proper steps to resolve the issues on time.

Significantly, CM Sarma said that when it came to resolving border issues, Assam has to play the role of an elder brother.

“I want to make Akhil Gogoi understand that we cannot change the geography. We (all northeastern states) will have to live like seven sister in the region. We do not have any other option. We will never be able to live in peace with our neighboring states if we fail to mantain brotherly relationships with them,” said CM Sarma.

Citing that in 1966, the Indian Air Force had bombed a part of Aizawl, and areas that form a part of the present-day Mizoram state during the ruling of Congress government, CM Sarma said, ” We have not behaved well with our neighbours.  It is obvious that we mistreat someone, they will do the same with us. Our relationship with Nagaland would not be broken now if we had not misbehaved with the people of Nagaland. There are a lot of things in the history and to fix things and to resolve the border issues now, Assam has to play the role of an elder brother.”
