Sikkim recorded the highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases after 36 fresh cases emerged on Friday, taking the tally in the Himalayan state to 63.
Out of 60 samples from primary contacts, 36 sample were found positive. All new cases were detected in the virology lab at STNM hospital in Gangtok.
The patients have been admitted to the isolation ward of STNM hospital for treatment.
Earlier on Friday morning, 14 more people who recently returned from Mumbai tested positive for coronavirus in Sikkim, taking the total number of cases in the state to 27.
All positive cases were shifted to STNM Hospital and the three facility quarantine centres have been declared as containment zone.
The state now has 60 active COVID-19 cases, while three patients have recovered from the deadly disease.
Meanwhile, Sikkim government has postponed opening of educational institutions to August 2020.
