The Sikkim Democratic Front has alleged that the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha is behind the attack on the veteran leader

Amid hectic politicking ahead of the assembly elections in Sikkim, former Speaker KN Rai was attacked while the leader was on a door to door campaign at Mazi goan in Melli. As per inputs, the senior SDF leader suffered injuries in his face.

The SDF in the meantime has alleged that SKM is behind the attack.

In a press statement, the SDF after the attack on KN Rai stated, “The senior Leader of SDF Party, Shri K. N Rai, Former speaker along with Dr. Shiva Kumar Timshina, Spokesperson was brutally and physically attack by the some members of the SKM party at Mazi Gaon,Melli at around 2.30 p.m . The SDF vehemently condemns such henious act of crime. The police must arrest the culprits immediately. This clearly refelcts that there is no democracy in Sikkim and rule of law has totally collapsed.”

But significantly, SKM leader and political secretary to Sikkim CM PS Tamang, Jacob Khaling has condemned the attack in strongest terms.

In a post on Facebook, Khaling after the attack said, “The recent news from Malli has made my heart very tremendous. I strongly oppose this incident. Mr. K.N. Rai is not only the leader of the opposition but also the former president and former minister of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. It’s so sad that the senior person is being attacked. Whoever has attacked this, strict action should be taken. I am an innocent person …. Perhaps I won’t accept such politics.

In politics, at some time there can be a young manjha saying. At times, young men can be a simple hand-hand, but the senior politician of the state, be it side or opposition, such violence is not good for future society. Our politics should be based on policy and principles.

Apologizing to Mr. KN Rai and his family and praying to God for his recovery.

If politics is like this, I will take leave now and work to live my life doing my own business.”

Citizens Action Party (CAP) founder and the party’s CM candidate for the ensuing assembly election has also condemned the attack on KN Rai.

In a post on social media, Ganesh Rai said, “I am anguished to know about the brutal attack on Shri KN Rai, former Speaker and his aides at Mazi goan, Melli. I condemn this cowardly act and urge every Sikkimese citizen to raise a voice against such an incident. I expect a fair investigation from the Sikkim police and urge them to bring those perpetrators to justice.”
