In yet another blow for the ruling Congress in Mizoram, sitting MLA from Tuirial constituency, Mingdailova Khiangte has resigned from the membership of the State Legislative Assembly.
Khiangte submitted his resignation to speaker S Hiphei at the latter’s residence.
When asked the reason for stepping down, Khiangte said that that he was not allowed by the party to contest from Tuirial and roped in Joseph Ralte as his replacement.
The Congress party had announced candidates for 36 of the 40 constituencies denying party tickets to 9 sitting MLAs. Mingdailova Khiagte being one of those to miss out.
Notably 12 fresh faces were given a chance to contest from the party as the party also decided to swap constituencies of a few other sitting MLAs who did get party tickets.
Khiangte is the fourth legislator to desert the Congress party ahead of the upcoming state elections and all four resignations have come in a period of less than 6 weeks.
The single-phase election to the 40-member Mizoram assembly would be held on November 28.
As many as 7,68,181 people will be eligible to cast their votes in the upcoming elections.
