The Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill led by BJP MP Rajendra Agarwal met officials of the Union Home, Law and Justice, and External Affairs ministry, and sought their opinion regarding the passage of the Bill.
The meeting was presided over by JPC Chairman Rajendra Agarwal. Congress MPs from Assam Sushmita Dev and Bhubaneswar Kalita were present in the meeting while BJP MPs Ramen Deka and Kamakhya Prasad abstained from attending the meet.
A Joint Parliamentary Committee on the bill had visited Guwahati and Silchar in May to gather views of political and social organisations as well the general public on the proposed amendment.
Opinions on the Bill, however, appeared divided in Assam, with people in Barak valley voicing support to it, while those in Brahmaputra valley opposing the amendment tooth and nail.
