Curfew has been imposed in parts of Shillong under section 144 CR PC following a complete collapse of law and order in Meghalaya’s Capital Shillong that includes localities of Jawai, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawpren, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment and Mawlong Hat.

A violent clash broke out late yesterday evening that lasted till the wee hours today at Mothpran locality, between police and an unruly mob suspected to be drivers and conductors of the Shillong Town Public Transport System (STPTS).

Uncountable numbers of tear gas shells ripped through the silence of Shillong night as police tried to bring the riot like situation under control. The police also had to resort to the use of water cannons as the unruly mob pelted stones at the police.

The situation flared up in the evening after an altercation took place between one of the STPTS driver and a resident of the Mothpran locality. Later during the day, a huge crowd, suspected to be instigated reached the locality to confront the resident.

It’s when the police intervened and tried to stop the mob, the situation turned violent as the mob started pelting stones at the police personnel stationed in the area. As a result additional forces were requisitioned to bring the situation under control. Anti-riot vehicles and fire tenders had to be deployed in the area and police had to burst tear gas shells in the area to disperse the mob.

As situation turned worse, police resorted to water cannons and brought the situation under control. A journalist of a local daily received head injury along with few police personnel’s during stone pelting. Meanwhile, security has been beefed up with Shillong Police and the CRPF cordoning off the area.
