Child marriage is rampant in Meghalaya: Minister Paul Lyngdoh

Meghalaya Minister for Social Welfare, Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday acknowledged that there is rampant child marriage taking place in Meghalaya.

While speaking to Northeast Live, Lyndoh said, “One of the major drawbacks of society in Meghalaya is that the phenomenon of children getting married in very early age and its factor that has contributed to school dropout rate and poverty in society.”

“The department has done extensive research and there is a need to create a huge social awareness”, Lyngdoh said releasing the Khasi translation of the POCSO Act, ‘Ki kyndon ain 2012’ in Shillong.

The programme was organised by Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

“Last year, we have initiated the Early Childhood Development Mission, which focuses on the growth of child specially their capacity to think, which is at its peak from the age of 0 to 8 of age,” the minister said.
