After two years of its formation, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) of Mizoram is now officially registered as a regional party by the Election Commission of India.

The news was confirmed by ZPM chairman Lalliansawia at a press conference on Friday.

The ZPM led by Lalduhoma, which was earlier a State party has now finally become a united regional party after the poll panel gave it registration under section 29A of the Representation of the People’s Act, 1951.

Speaking on the press conference, Lalliansawia claimed that the ZPM received strong support from the people across the state and also stated that that the party with seven legislators is the main opposition party in the state.

The ZPM was initially formed by three parties – Zoram Nationalist Party, Mizoram People’s Conference and Zoram Exodus Movement in August 2017. Later, it was joined by Mizoram People’s Party, Zoram Reformation Front and Zoram Democratic Front.

The newly formed party contested for 35 seats in the recently held Assembly polls on November 2018 and bagged 8 seats with the party Chief Lalduhoma winning two seats in Serchhip and Aizawl West-I.

However, Lalduhoma later vacated Aizawl West-I seat, which was won by the ruling Mizo National Front in the assembly by-polls held in April.
