He became the International Master at the age of 12, and soon became the third-youngest Grandmaster in history.

D Gukesh, an 18-year-old chess prodigy from Chennai, scripted history today as he became the youngest-ever world champion. He beat Chinese Grand Master Ding Liren by a dramatic 7.5-6-.5 margin in the 14th and final match of the classical round of the World Chess Championship final in Singapore.

Playing with black pieces, Gukesh Dommaraju defied all odds to steal a match that was heading towards a draw. With this win, the teenage sensation became only the second Indian after legendary Viswanathan Anand to become the world champion. Anand won the Chanpionship four times in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012.

Earlier this year, he won the candidates tournament to earn the right to face the defending champion.

Gukesh is the third-youngest Grandmaster, the third-youngest to reach a FIDE rating of 2700, the youngest to reach a rating of 2750, and the third-youngest to compete at the Candidates.

Born in 29 May 2006 in Chennai to a Telugu family, Gukesh belongs to a family of doctors. His father, Dr. Rajinikanth, is an ENT surgeon, while his mother, Dr. Padma, is a microbiologist.

Gukesh took to chess at the tender age of seven. Gukesh first made headlines when he won the Under-9 Asian School Chess Championships in 2015. However, it wasn’t until he emerged victorious at the Under-12 World Youth Chess Championships in 2018 that his skills came to the fore, and people started talking about him.

He became the International Master at the age of 12, and soon became the third-youngest Grandmaster in history.

In 2023, Gukesh made headlines after he became the youngest player to achieve a rating of 2750 in FIDE ratings. In doing so, he even surpassed the five-time world champion Vishwanathan Anand and established himself as the top Indian chess player.

Earlier this year, Gukesh qualified for the world chess championship final after becoming the youngest-ever winner of the FIDE candidates’ tournament, setting up an exciting clash against China’s Ding Liren.
In September, Gukesh helped India win a first-ever Chess Olympiad gold as he teamed up with the likes of Arjun Erigaisi, Pentala Harikrishna, R Praggnanandhaa dn Vidit Gujrathi.
