Water Metro: Water Metro is India’s first attempt at integrating water transport into a city’s larger urban mobility system.

Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur are among the 24 cities across India identified for the rollout of the innovative ‘Water Metro’ system, a water-based transit model set to redefine urban mobility. The announcement follows a review visit by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, to the Kochi Water Metro which is India’s first integrated water transport system.

For Assam, a state defined by the vast Brahmaputra River and its tributaries, this initiative holds immense promise. The three selected cities are strategically located along major waterways historically used for transport and commerce. Sonowal expressed particular enthusiasm about the project’s transformative potential in his home state.

What is the Water Metro?
The Water Metro is India’s first attempt at integrating water transport into a city’s larger urban mobility system. It is designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and offer a greener alternative to traditional road transport. This modern system combines conventional river navigation with cutting-edge technology, ensuring high safety standards and commuter-friendly services.

The project’s expansion across India, including Assam, aims to reconnect people with historic waterways while promoting sustainability. With advanced safety protocols, modern vessels, and seamless last-mile connectivity, the Water Metro is geared to deliver efficient, comfortable, and environmentally friendly urban transit.

According to the ministry, the feasibility studies will assess geographical suitability, infrastructure needs, and passenger demand in each proposed city. In Assam, where riverine routes are abundant, the Water Metro could offer a viable solution to urban traffic and pollution challenges.

“The Water Metro concept is designed to meet modern demands, with top-notch safety protocols and commuter-friendly amenities that make every journey efficient and enjoyable,” Sonowal added.

During his inspection, Sonowal toured key terminals including High Court Junction, Fort Kochi, and Vypeen, gaining firsthand experience of the operations and infrastructure. “The Kochi Water Metro is a shining example of India’s ability to blend tradition with innovation. Inspired by its success, our ministry has approved technical feasibility studies in 24 cities including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur to explore replicating this model,” Sonowal Stated.

This initiative sets the stage for a greener, more connected, and inclusive future in urban transportation, especially in water-rich states like Assam.
