With encephalitis creating a national uproar over the huge death toll of minors in Bihar, the heat is on in the Assam Medical College Hospital at Dibrugarh to tackle the yearly cases of encephalitis that take several lives.

Recent reports had highlighted the non-functional status of the newly built specialized encephalitis ICCU at the AMCH. Even state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took stock of the situation during a recent visit and instructed the hospital management to complete all works by September 30 and make it functional.

Sources at the AMCH have pointed to additional funds coming soon for the ICCU under the government’s repair and renovation head. Additional manpower like 4 doctors, 14 GNM nurses, technicians and 4th grade staff will be appointed for the 60 bedded specialized ward.

Talking to Northeast Live, Superintendent of the AMCH, Indra Nath Chutia said that encephalitis cases have gone up this year so far. These include patients of both Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome.
