Vijaya Dashami which marks the end of Durga Puja is being celebrated across Assam with much fervour today.
Since the morning, devotees gathered in large numbers at various puja pandals to pay obeisance to Goddess Durga.
After nine days of Navratri, the festival culminates with the immersion of the idol of Goddess Durga. It is believed that on this day, Lord Ram killed Raavan, signifying the victory of good over evil.
As such, Vijaya Dashami is the eternal promise that good will always vanquish evil.
As many as six ghats have been designated here in Guwahati for the idol immersion of Goddess Durga.
At the same time, women folk took part in traditional Sindoor Khela on the holy occasion of Vijayadashami.
Meanwhile, in Dhubri, women and young girls engaged in the Sindoor Khela as they playfully smeared vermillion on each other’s faces.
A festive atmosphere was seen at the pandal as youngsters danced and sang to the beat of drums as they bid farewell to the mother goddess.
The auspicious day is also observed as Dussehra. Dussehra denotes the victory of good over evil and there are two stories associated with the festival in Hindu mythology.
Durga is said to have defeated Mahishasura on this day after a nine-day battle.
As per another mythology, Dussehra is celebrated to mark Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana, the ten-headed demon king of Lanka.
Today along with the rest of the country, Dussehra preparations are being made in different parts of Assam.
Dussehra preparations are being seen in Mushalpur as a large effigy of Raavan has been prepared for the occasion.
People are waiting eagerly for the main event later today when the effigy would be burnt up in a spectacle to be seen.
Meanwhile, in Tihu major preparations have been made for a Dussehra event.
Local organisers have made a grand effigy of Raavan which would be ceremonially burnt to mark the occasion of Dussehra.
