The ULFA pro-talk team is likely to meet Union Home Mnister Amit Shah and interlocutor AK Mishra today
The tripartite peace talks between the Centre, Assam government and the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) pro-talk faction will be held today at the national capital.
The ULFA pro-talk team is likely to meet Union Home Mnister Amit Shah and interlocutor AK Mishra today.
A 4-member delegation of the ULFA pro-talk faction led by chairman Arabinda Rajkowa and Anup Chetia are in Delhi for the talks.
Observers see this as the final push to conclude the long-awaited peace deal.
The ULFA faction headed by Rajkhowa had began talks with the centre in 2011 but a final solution is yet to be agreed upon.
Pro-talk faction leader Anup Chetia who is also the convenor of the Northeast Indegenous Peoples’ Forum, recently said that he hoped that the peace accord will be signed before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
A draft agreement was shared with the pro-talk faction a few months ago, however the pro-talks faction was reportedly not satisfied with the offer.
It may be mentioned here that since Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as Chief Minister of Assam in 2021, he has been appealing to the chief of the proscribed outfit Paresh Baruah to sit across the table and iniate a peace process to end the decades of insurgency in the state.
