A ceasefire violation has been reported from Sumy, Ukraine forcing students back to the hostel.

This comes as a major disappointment at a time when hopes were high that the students stranded in Sumy will be safely evacuated.

Earlier in the day Russia had announced ceasefire open humanitarian corridors in Ukrainian cities that include Kyiv, Mariupol, Kharkiv, and Sumy.

In fact Russia had opened two routes for the students stranded in the region. The humanitarian corridors had been apparently opened from 12:30 pm Indian Standard Time.

While Route 1 started from Sumy and ended at Belgorod via Suzdha, Route 2 started from Sumi and covered Golu-bov-ka, Romny, Lokh-vista and Lubny.

It may be mentioned that close to 700 Indian students are said to be stranded in Sumy of which around 40 are from Assam.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Russian president Vladimir Putin a short while back and stressed on the safe evacuation of Indian citizens from Sumy at the earliest. President Putin reciprocating to PM Modi’s appeal assured of all possible cooperation in the evacuation of Indian citizens.

Apart from this Prime minister Modi urged the Russian president to hold direct talks with Ukraine president Zelensky in addition to the ongoing negotiations between representatives of both the nations. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi appreciated the announcement of ceasefire & establishment of humanitarian corridors in parts of Ukraine, including Sumy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the phone today.

According to sources, in the 35-minute phone call, PM Modi discussed the evacuation of Indian students and nationals from the war-torn nation and the Ukraine situation in a whole. President Zelenskyy reportedly briefed PM Modi over the situation in Ukraine.

It may be mentioned that Modi and Zelenskyy interacted over the phone on February 26 hours after India abstained to vote on a UNSC resolution by the US that “deplores in the strongest terms” Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine.
