Two Assam Cong MLAs extend support to BJP

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "With their support, the strength of our government will further enhance."

In a big blow to the Congress in Assam ahead of the lok Sabha polls, two MLAs – Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das have extended their support to the BJP.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Congress MLA from karimganj North resigned from the post of Working President of the party. Purkayastha said that he would, however, continue to work as a primary member of the party.

Basanta Das represents the Mangaldai constituency and had served as a minister in the third Tarun Gogoi Cabinet from 2011-16. He won the Mangaldai seat twice, in 2001 and in 2011 in a Congress ticket.

Speaking to media, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha said, “We have noticed the development vision of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. We extend our support to the government for the benefit of the state’s developments, citizens, and constituents. Development of the state should not be politicised. We will keep supporting the government in its efforts to make development in the state.”

He further said, “I will resign from the post of working president of Assam Congress, however I will continue to work as an MLA.”

Basanta Das also said, “I have decided to extend my full support to the government in its effort to bring development in the state.”

CM Sarma said, “Basanta Das and Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha have decided to extend their support to the state government as well as to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s central government for any development initiatives. I welcome and respect their decision. With their support, the strength of our government will further enhance.”
