A local court in Dharmanagar, North Tripura district, on Tuesday sentenced two brothers to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment after they were convicted of raping a minor schoolgirl.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each of the convicts, with an additional eight months of imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
Public Prosecutor Sudarshan Sharma, speaking to reporters, gave details regarding the verdict.
He stated that the brothers were convicted of raping the minor, and the court handed down the strict sentence to address the severity of the crime.
The case originated from a First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Dharmanagar Women Police Station in February 2022, following the incident.
The police swiftly submitted a chargesheet within two months of the FIR, and after over two years of trial, the court reached its decision, reflecting the state’s firm stance.
