Tripura Renewal Energy Development Agency, or TREDA, which works for the utilization of non-conventional energy for sustainable development, especially in remote areas, has been honoured with three awards recently for the successful implementation of various renewal energy schemes and projects in the development of Tripura.

Addressing a press conference at the secretariat, Dev Varma, who is also the Power Minister and under whose department is the renewal energy department, said that TREDA has been awarded as the best performing State Nodal Agency amongst NE states for the installation of the highest number of solar pumps under the PM KUSUM scheme amongst NE. He further claimed that TREDA is playing a vital role in the development of Tripura by using non-conventional energy.

According to the Ministry, some areas where TREDA has done commendable work by utilizing the existing central government scheme and in convergence with other state government schemes in Tripura are the installation of some 1151 solar pumps for irrigation and the solarisation of existing 2600 pumps, both under the PM KUSUM Scheme, by setting up micro solar grids to generate electricity in remote tribal hilly habitations of Tripura where conventional electricity is not available or unreachable.

Dev Varma further informed that TREDA has also taken initiatives to set up Community Solar Drinking Water Projects to meet the problem of clean drinking water in remote villages, besides encouraging people to utilise biogas or cow dung gas in rural areas for household cooking as a supplement to LPG cylinders under the GOBARDHAN Scheme. In addition, the installation of solar high masts in various rural markets, motor stands, and populated areas is in progress.
