Tripura Police Dismisses Claims of Rising Violence, Asserts Record Low Crime Rates

Amid rising concerns about law and order in Tripura, the DGP states that crime is at its lowest in a decade, countering claims of unrest.
As opposition parties and even a ruling alliance partner express concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in Tripura, particularly regarding communal violence, the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan has firmly rejected these claims.
Ranjan stated that crime rates in the state have reached their lowest levels in the past decade, including a significant decline in incidents as recently as September. He attributed the allegations of police inaction and bias to organized efforts by vested interests aiming to spread misinformation and tarnish the police’s reputation.
Speaking to reporters during the Police Commemoration Day event at Manoranjan Debbarma Smriti Stadium in Agartala, DGP Ranjan emphasized the police’s commitment to maintaining law and order. He mentioned that Tripura’s Chief Minister, Manik Saha, has granted the police complete authority to take decisive action against lawbreakers, ensuring that law and order is upheld without interference.
“I would strongly say that some vested groups are trying to spread rumors about a deteriorating law and order situation, but the truth is that, according to data from the past ten years, crime in all major categories is at its lowest this year,” Ranjan said.
He also noted that recent festivals and elections occurred without incident, and any unrest was quickly addressed, with senior officials and additional forces deployed as necessary to restore peace.
Despite some instances of communal violence earlier this year, Ranjan highlighted that the Durga Puja festival was celebrated peacefully in those areas, with participation from all communities. This, he said, demonstrates the police’s success in managing law and order and providing a safe environment for the public.
Alongside DGP Ranjan, DGP (Intelligence) Anurag Dhankar reiterated the state police’s commitment to ensuring public safety during the press conference.
The day also marked Police Commemoration Day, a time to honor police personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Across India, including Tripura, “Smriti Parades” were held to remember those who lost their lives protecting the nation and its citizens over the past year.
DGP Ranjan acknowledged that since India’s Independence, over 35,000 police personnel, including many from Tripura, have died in service, highlighting the dedication and selflessness of the force.
