A post-mortem was conducted, and investigations are underway to track down the perpetrators.
In a chilling act of poaching, the carcass of a wild elephant was discovered in the Pramodnagar forest area under the Kalyanpur forest division in Khowai district of Tripura.
The brutal killing has sparked outrage and deep concern among locals.
The decomposing body of the elephant, with severe mutilations, was found on Sunday.
Following the discovery, senior forest officials and a large police team rushed to the site in the evening.
A post-mortem was conducted, and investigations are underway to track down the perpetrators.
Initial findings reveal that the elephant was shot dead, with bullet wounds found on both sides of its head.
Poachers then severed parts of its head and a rear leg, presumably to extract its valuable tusks.
Forest department veterinarian Keshav Debnath stated that poachers also removed an estimated 400 to 500 kilograms of meat from the body. Additionally, the elephant’s tail and tusks were found to be missing.
Sub-divisional Forest Officer Gaurav R. Wagh assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing and that all efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the culprits.
This incident has drawn comparisons to a similar case in 2014 in the dense forests of Uttar Maharani Pur, where a wild elephant was also poached. However, that case remains unresolved, raising concerns about the effectiveness of investigations into such heinous acts.
Adding to the growing distress in the region, last month, a wild elephant was hit by a train near the area and it succumbed to its injuries two days later.
The gruesome killing has left residents of Pramodnagar and surrounding areas deeply disturbed.
Forest officials have urged locals to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could aid in the ongoing investigation.
