Tripura by-polls: BJP wins both Boxanagar and Dhanpur seats

First Published: 8th September, 2023 13:21 IST

The victory of the BJP in the Boxanagar is very significant since only the Opposition had won the seat since 1972 until the last assembly elections

The BJP has recorded a thumping victory in the by-elections for the Boxanagar and Dhanpur seats by defeating the Left candidates by huge margins.
In Boxanagar, it was a clinical victory for BJP as the seat was a stronghold of the Opposition-both the Congress and the CPI-M.
Taffajal Hussain who contested for the BJP in the Boxanagar seat defeated Mizan Hossein, of the CPI(M) by a margin of 30, 327 votes. Taffajal Hussain secured 34, 146 votes while his opponent could manage to get only 3909 votes. Taffajal Hussain is the first Muslim candidate of the BJP in Tripura who has won in the assembly election.
In Dhanpur, the Saffron party sealed victory as Bindu Debnath defeated Left candidate Koushik Chanda by over 18, 871 votes. Bindu Debnath polled 30, 017 votes while Kaushik Chanda secured 11, 146 votes.
This is a big victory for the BJP in the by-polls since it was seen as a litmus test for the ruling party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The by-polls was also a ‘challenge’ of sorts for the BJP since the Opposition- CPI-M, Congress and the TIPRA Motha had unified in the run up to the elections to counter it.
An average turnout of 86.50 per cent was recorded in the two seats.
The Dhanpur seat fell vacant after the resignation of Union Minister Pratima Bhowmik and the death of CPI(M)’s Boxanagar lawmaker Samsul Haque in July this year.
A day after the by-elections for two constituencies in Tripura-Boxanagar and Dhanpur, the CPIM demanded a re-poll, alleging that the byelections in both constituencies have been rigged. The CPI (M ) had accused the BJP and a section of the police and civil administration of colluding and rigging the voting that was held on Tuesday.
