In the 8 assembly constituencies, there are as many as 6 kin of leaders in contesting the polls

The ensuing bypolls in the Northeast seems to be a family affair, with spouses and children of Chief Ministers, MPs and MLAs in the fray.

By-elections are going to be held in 5 seats in Assam and 1 in Meghalaya on November 13. In Sikkim, the ruling SKM has won both seats uncontested. One of the seats was won by Chief Minister P S Tamang’s son Aditya Golay Tamang.

Now in the 6 seats – 5 in Assam and one in Meghalaya, there are as many as 5 kin of leaders in the fray.

In Assam there are 3 kin of leaders as candidates. Tanzil Hussain, son of Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain, is the Congress’ Samaguri candidate. After winning the Lok Sabha election from Dhubri, former minister Rakibul vacated the Samaguri seat. Diplu Ranjan Sarma is the BJP candidate from the constituency.

BJP ally AGP has fielded Dipti Mayee Choudhury, wife of Bongaigaon MP Phani Bhushan Choudhury. He is the 8-time MLA from Bongaigaon. He has been winning the Bongaigaon seat since 1985.

In Dholai, Congress has fielded Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha, son of two-time former MLA Digendra Choudhary.

The scene is no different in the by-poll battle for the lone Gambegre seat in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills.

The ruling NPP has fielded CM Conrad Sangma’s wife Mehtab Chandee Sangma in Gambegre. She is pitted against TMC’s Sadhiarani M. Sangma, who is the lone female member of GHADC and also the wife of former minister Zenith Sangma.

The upcoming Gambegre by election is set to witness a high-profile contest and is predicted to be a 4 cornered fight between NPP, TMC, Congress and BJP.

The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Saleng A. Sangma, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Tura earlier this year.
