Tea vendor killed in Agartala for denying tea and cigarettes

The accused has been identified as Dipankar Sarkar while the deceased has been identified as Sukhen Das.

A young man was arrested on Wednesday by Agartala police for allegedly murdering a tea vendor in Pratapgarh market in Tripura’s capital, following an altercation that escalated when the vendor refused to give him tea and cigarettes without payment.

The incident occurred two days ago, and the suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Dipankar Sarkar while the deceased has been identified as Sukhen Das..

Sanjit Sen, Officer-in-Charge of the East Agartala police station while speaking on the case said, “A complaint was lodged two days ago by Tithi Das, the wife of the deceased, Sukhen Das. According to the complaint, Sukhen was attacked by Dipankar Sarkar, a local youth, after Sukhen denied him tea and cigarettes because Dipankar did not have money to pay.”

“The altercation led to a fatal incident the following morning when Sukhen reopened his tea stall. Dipankar, in a fit of rage, struck Sukhen on the head with a brick. Sukhen fell unconscious and was rushed to GB Hospital, where he underwent surgery but succumbed to his injuries later that evening,” Sen added.
The accused Dipankar Sarkar has been sent to four-days police custody for further interrogation to unearth the cause for the murder.

Local residents revealed that Dipankar was addicted to marijuana.

During the interrogation, Dipankar confessed to attacking Sukhen out of rage over being denied cigarettes and tea.

This tragic incident highlights the severe consequences of substance addiction and its impact on community safety.

The deceased is survived by his wife and two daughters.
