The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted various steps undertaken by the Nagaland Police on the war on drugs, police reforms, and various other issues confronting the department

Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and in-charge of Home and Border Affairs, Y. Patton, on Thursday said that systematic efforts have been undertaken to arrest criminals and disrupt the drug peddling and trafficking networks in the state.
Backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan, Y. Patton informed that the State Police has so far registered 101 cases and arrested 143 criminals, including six police personnel from various parts of the Northeast.
Addressing a press conference, the Deputy Chief Minister highlighted various steps undertaken by the Nagaland Police on the war on drugs, police reforms, and various other issues confronting the department.
The Deputy Chief Minister mentioned that scientific aid to investigation is one crucial area of concern for the conviction of drug traffickers. The department felt the need to upgrade and update the Forensic Science Laboratory Division (FSL) Unit.
“The State Police have set up an Anti-Narcotics Task Force booth at the state level with state-wide jurisdiction and in the districts to focus on this problem,” informed Patton.
Speaking on the Nagaland Government setting up a high-level committee headed by the DGP Nagaland Rupin Sharma to look into the restructuring and reorganization of Nagaland Police, Y. Patton said, “It was felt that the State Police has grown in numbers, but there is an urgent need to make it more efficient on functional and operational lines so that it can effectively deal with current problems as well as for the future.”
Pointing out that the Nagaland Police is predominantly armed police-centric, with battalions and armed branches comprising almost 75%, Patton said that this may have been a requirement in the past, but with changing times, there is a pressing need to re-orient and refocus on the investigation and related functions like forensics, prosecution, etc.
Furthermore, the Home Minister informed that, as per his earlier direction, the PHQ has been carrying out an exercise to reduce the deployment of bodyguards and static guards, and so far the department has withdrawn almost 200 bodyguards.
It may be mentioned here that there are almost 3000 personnel of the Nagaland Police attached either as bodyguards or for non-police duties.
On March 27, Patton had directed DGP Nagaland to minimize such deployments and attachments within two months so that more manpower is available for policing and law and order work.
The Home Minister also took note of the department’s shortage of vehicles for law and order duties and directed PHQ to undertake an exercise to withdraw vehicles attached to retired officers, especially those attached for more than 3 months.
He also requested that the retired officers cooperate with this exercise in the interest of public services.
