The much-anticipated event will be headlined by Senegalese-American pop icon Akon, legendary disco diva Maizie Williams from Boney M, and rising Hong Kong rapper Lucas from SuperM, setting the stage for a musical celebration like no other.
A Global Music Experience
Akon, who dominated the charts with hits like “Smack That” and “Lonely,” is set to perform on November 16 as part of his global Superfan Tour. Known for his electrifying stage presence, the Grammy-nominated R&B star has enjoyed a career spanning decades, collaborating with icons such as Michael Jackson, Eminem, and Lady Gaga. Akon’s return to India comes after his recent performance at the star-studded wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, marking another high-profile stop in his tour.
Joining Akon is Maizie Williams, an original member of the iconic disco group Boney M, who will perform as part of the group’s farewell tour. Meanwhile, Lucas from the South Korean supergroup SuperM and member of the Chinese pop group WayV, will be performing in Shillong for the first time. Having recently made his solo debut with “Renegade,” Lucas has become a rising star in the global music scene, especially among younger fans of K-pop and hip-hop.
Boosting Meghalaya’s Cultural Profile
The festival, backed by the Meghalaya government, is seen as a major opportunity to showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage and its blossoming tourism sector.
With an international lineup expected to draw audiences both local as well as from across the country , the government is hopeful the event will attract thousands of music enthusiasts from across the country and beyond, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
Talking with North East Live, local youth expressed excitement about the festival, emphasizing its potential to bring global attention to Meghalaya’s vibrant cultural scene. The festival’s unique blend of international and regional talent is expected to foster a cultural exchange that will further strengthen Meghalaya’s position as a premier tourist destination in India.
According to the sources, The first Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival was held in November 2016 at the Polo Grounds in Shillong. The festival was organized by Dr. Dinabandhu Sahoo, a botany professor at the University of Delhi, who was inspired to start the festival after seeing wild cherry trees growing haphazardly in Shillong.
Additional Performers and Ticket Prices
Alongside the headliners, the festival will also feature performances from multi-platinum DJ R3HAB and nu-metal band KORN, adding diversity to the lineup and drawing fans from various musical genres. Last year, the festival attracted huge crowds with performances by Ne-Yo and Ronan Keating, and this year’s event is set to surpass expectations with its bigger and bolder lineup.
