Meghalaya is witnessing a surge in dengue cases since past few days. So far one person has died because of the mosquito-borne viral disease, said State Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh today.

The deceased person was a resident of Matchikol in Tura. He died while receiving treatment at a hospital yesterday.

Speaking to the media, Minister Lyngdoh said that the state reported 3 to 4 dengue cases every day. “To my knowledge there was a scare 48 hours back, but as of today, there have been no further increase in cases,” she said.

Noting that the state’s plains areas have seen an increase in cases, Minister Lyngdoh said the hotspots will become clear after the health agency received a comprehensive report.

Amid the surge in dengue cases, the State government has issued an advisory for the people, urging them to ensure prompt disposal of solid waste and prevent its accumulation at landfills as they are breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Additionally, hospitals in the state have been directed to be on high alert.

Dengue causes high fever, and symptoms like headache, nausea, muscle or joint pain and vomiting.

In severe cases, if dengue is not treated promptly, it can cause a drastic fall in blood platelets, which can be life-threatening.
