Two groups from the 32-member expedition team focused on studying Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in Sikkim’s Mangan district visited Muguthang in Lonak Valley and Lachen Khangste Lake in Sikkim on Sunday.
During their visit, the teams evaluated the impact of past glacial floods in Muguthang and conducted a preliminary assessment of Khangste Lake.
Following this, a presentation meeting was held at the Thangu guest house, where the team compiled and analyzed the data gathered from their assessments.
It is to be mentioned that the expedition team successfully reached Gurudongmar Lake on 6th September.
The team also conducted a preliminary assessment of Khangchung Tsho Lake, situated at 18,000 feet, which is the largest lake in Sikkim, measuring over 3 kilometers in length.
The 32-member team that left from Zero Point, Gangtok on 31st August is on a mission to conduct a detailed susceptibility assessment of glacial lakes – Tenchungkha, Khangchung Chho, Lachen-Khangtse, Lachung-Khangtse, La Tsho and Shako Chho.
This mission is not covering the three high-risk lakes, namely Guru-dongmar A, B, and C, as these lakes are considered to be sacred with sentimental value for the locals.
The study mission comes in the backdrop of the massive destruction and devastation caused by the glacial lake outburst in the South Lhonak lake in North Sikkim last year.
