The situation has highlighted the critical need for effective solutions to enhance Sikkim’s road infrastructure.
Sikkim is yet again cut-off from rest of the country as National Highway 10 is shut again due to landslide at multiple places. Heavy rains in Sikkim over the last three days have once again wreaked havoc in the state.
After being operational for a day the National Highway 10, a crucial link between Sikkim and Siliguri, has been shut again.
Just this morning, NH-10 was once again shut at 28 and 29 Mile and Melli, following heavy rainfall. Additionally, the Gangtok-Mangan route was blocked after the collapse of the Rang-Rang Bridge and Singtam-Dikchu road is also blocked again at Marchak Lower Tintek due to continuous rainfall.
With the bridge down, Mangan district headquarters is cut off from the rest of the state. The alternative route via Dzongu is also blocked due to damage to Sankhalang bridge last year. The district administration is currently assessing the damage and working to restore connectivity as soon as possible, they said.
Moreover, 20th Mile between Singtam and Rangpo route was blocked due to continuous falling of boulders.
Traffic congestion has been reported along NH10 due to multiple landslides, with tourists experiencing delays of three to four hours. They have been advised using the alternative route via Lava and Kalimpong, officials said.
In light of National Highway 10 being shut again in Sikkim due to heavy rainfall, state’s Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang convened a high-level meeting today at the Tashiling Secretariat.
The situation has highlighted the critical need for effective solutions to enhance Sikkim’s road infrastructure.
This meeting aims to develop strategies to restore and maintain smoother connectivity throughout Sikkim, ensuring safety and accessibility for residents and travelers alike.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the state over the next two days, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall.
