Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj's memorandum highlights the need for Assembly seat reservations for the Limboo-Tamang communities.
The civil society organisation Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj (SNS) has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office, the President of India, urging them to address the state’s long-standing unresolved issues including restoration of political rights for Sikkimese Nepalis.
The memorandum that comes ahead of the state’s 50th statehood day celebrations on 16 May 2025, has also been submitted to key political parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and the Communist Party of India (CPI).
Among the primary concerns raised by SNS is the removal of seat reservations for Sikkimese Nepalis in 1979 has led to political marginalisation.
Additionally, the memorandum highlights the need for Assembly seat reservations for the Limboo-Tamang communities, which were recognised as Scheduled Tribes in 2003 but are yet to receive their constitutional rights in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly.
Another key demand is the protection of Article 371F, which guarantees Sikkim’s special constitutional status. SNS has expressed concerns over the gradual erosion of Sikkim’s autonomy, which it claims has led to economic distress, high suicide rates, and declining fertility rates in the state.
The organisation has urged the Indian government and political leaders to take urgent steps to resolve these issues, calling for parliamentary discussions and legislative measures to uphold Sikkim’s constitutional and political rights. With the state reaching a significant milestone in its history, SNS has emphasised the need for immediate action to protect the identity, rights, and well-being of the people of Sikkim.
