Sikkim LS MP Indra Hang Subba flags NH-10 issues in Parliament, urges Centre to hand over the highway to NHIDCL

Subba urged the Centre to implement a separate policy addressing the challenges faced by the Himalayan region, including Sikkim.

Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba today raised the issue of multiple sections of National Highway 10, the only highway connecting Sikkim with rest of the country, being cut off at several locations due to rain-triggered landslides and urged the Centre to urgently hand over the maintenance and upgradation of the highway to NHIDCL during his speech in Lok Sabha today.

Indra Hang Subba said that the NH-10 stretches from Sevoke to Rangpo also falls under West Bengal’s jurisdiction and because of the poor maintenance of the stretch from the West Bengal side, Sikkim ended up bearing the brunt.

He urged the Central government to hand over the NH-10 to any central agency such as the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for maintenance, and smooth operation and to ensure better management and timely resolution of such disruptions in the future as West Bengal does not take proper maintenance of it.

He also urged the Centre to implement a separate policy addressing the challenges faced by the Himalayan region, including Sikkim.

“Sikkim is a Himalayan State. Monsoon season in the Himalayan regions lasts for 5 to 6 months, and landslide rains frequently cause road destruction, therefore we urge the Central government to implement a separate policy to address such challenges in all Himalayan states,” he added.
