The Sikkim government is all set to introduce a slew of major developmental projects to enhance tourism and infrastructure in the Himalayan State.
In this regard, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Saturday held a crucial meeting at Mintokgang with Chief Secretary V.B. Pathak, ACS (Home Department) R. Telang, and heads of the Tourism, Building & Housing, Social Welfare, Rural Development, and Land Revenue Departments.
The discussions revolved around initiatives aimed at boosting tourism, improving infrastructure, and supporting local communities.
One of the major highlights was the infrastructure development at Nathula, which is set to enhance the region’s tourism potential. The plan includes constructing a parking facility capable of accommodating 1,000 vehicles, along with other necessary amenities, aimed at making Nathula a more accessible and attractive destination for tourists.
Another significant project is the transformation of Ganesh Tok into a global tourist hub. The area will be revamped with viewpoints, spaces for local vendors, dining areas, restaurants, and event venues. The design will showcase Sikkim’s unique art and culture, with a focus on reflecting the region’s topography and ecological balance, targeting both domestic and international tourists.
Additionally, the government is set to build the Kanchendzonga State of the Art Convention Centre in Namli. The centre will feature guest houses for VVIPs and VIPs, modern conference rooms, auditoriums, restaurants, a sports complex, and a wedding hall. This facility aims to support both official and cultural events while also promoting tourism and providing a venue for large-scale events in the state.
In Gangtok, a 500-bedded hostel for working women will be constructed. The hostel will provide affordable accommodation and common areas, specifically designed to cater to the needs of working women.
The Mukhyamantri Punarvaas Awas Yojana, a housing scheme, was also discussed. This initiative focuses on providing resettlement and housing for individuals displaced or affected by the recent floods on October 3rd and 4th, 2023. The government aims to address the immediate housing needs of those impacted by the disaster.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Tamang also emphasized the importance of incorporating Sikkimese aesthetics and cultural elements into these projects. He stressed that each initiative should reflect the heritage of the region, aligning with local traditions and enhancing Sikkim’s unique identity.
