With the enforcement of the Sikkim Re-Organisation of Districts Act, 2021, Sikkim now has 6 districts with the addition of Pakyong and Soreng, carved out of the existing East and West Sikkim districts, respectively.

The four previous districts have been renamed as well. North Sikkim has been renamed as Mangan, West Sikkim as Gyalshing, East Sikkim renamed as Gangtok and South Sikkim as Namchi.

Earlier on the third and final day of the Fifth Session of the 10th Assembly, the Sikkim Legislative Assembly voted for the creation of 2 new districts of Pakyong and Soreng, carved out of the existing East and West Sikkim districts.
