Incessant rains over the past few days has aggravated the scenario in Sikkim and the neighboring areas of Darjeeling-Kalimpong. Rain triggered landslides and flash floods have disrupted communication in several key areas.

Sikkim along with Darjeeling and Kalimpong has received nearly 70 mm of rainfall, which has brought in the seasonal monsoon woes for the locals. Commuters are badly hit with landslides blocking roads at several locations.

The National Highway 10, which is considered the lifeline for the people of Sikkim remains closed with landslide blocking the road at 29th mile. Another landslide occurred at Sevoke near Kali Mandir on Tuesday night after heavy rains triggered the mudslip at that point.

Meanwhile, multiple stretches along the highway have been rendered unmotorable due to landslides causing immense difficulty to commuters. Several accidents have also been reported since the past two days which has made travelling in the region dangerous.

In the neighbouring Darjeeling-Kalimpong region, several routes including the NH-10 have been badly affected due to heavy rains and landslides. Most people travelling to Sikkim are taking alternate route to reach their destination.

As heavy rains continue to lash the region and debris from landslides blocking several portions, repairing and rescue works have been hit by continued heavy downpour, while supply of essential commodities remain disrupted.
