India’s longest serving chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling has resigned. Chamling’s resignation comes after opposition Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) scripted history by winning the Assembly polls in the state.
Chamling on Friday submitted his resignation to Governor Ganga Prasad to pave the way for formation of the next government.
The SKM won an absolute majority in the Sikkim Assembly polls, bringing the curtains down on two and half decades of Pawan Chamling led Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) rule in the Himalayan state.
SKM won 17 seats to secure absolute majority. Chamling’s SDF meanwhile, could only garner 15 seats, which means that Chamling was denied a sixth term as his close to 25-year-old rule came to an end.
