Sikkim : Bailey Bridge submerged by Kanaka River, upper Dzongu villages cut off

First Published: 20th May, 2023 14:33 IST

The local authorities have been informed about the incident, and they have initiated measures to repair the bridge as soon as possible

Last night, the Kanaka River experienced surges that led to the submersion of the Bailey bridge at Mantam. As a result, the villages of Sakyong Pentong and Tingvong GPUs in Upper Dzongu have been cut off once again.

This incident has caused a great deal of concern for the residents of the affected villages, who rely on the bridge to commute to nearby areas for work, education, and healthcare. The bridge, which was built as a temporary measure after the old bridge was damaged in previous floods, has been submerged several times in the past.

The local authorities have been informed about the incident, and they have initiated measures to repair the bridge as soon as possible. However, the repair work may take some time, and until then, the villagers will be left stranded without proper access to essential services.

The incident highlights the need for a long-term solution to the problem of floods in the area, which has become a recurring issue. The authorities must take steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of the affected villages and provide them with adequate infrastructure that can withstand the forces of nature.
