The Si Donyi Polo festival is underway in Arunachal Pradesh. The festival is the main cultural event for the Tagin community of the state and is slated to continue till January 8.
The festival which entered its third day today is being celebrated with great pomp and show at Naharlagun.

While today a good turnout is expected, yesterday too saw a healthy number of people participating in the festivities. Special prayers were held at the venue and cultural programmes being held in the evening time. Several local indigenous games were also played at the venue.
Tagin, one of Arunachal Pradesh’s communities that dwell in the Upper Subansiri and West Siang districts, celebrates the Si-Donyi festival. Celebrations takes place every year in January. It is observed for the community’s and mankind’s overall well-being.

Si-Donyi is derived from two words: ‘Si,’ which means earth, and ‘Dyoni,’ means the Sun. So, during the festival, the sun and earth, together with other deities, are worshipped.
To delight the Si Donyi, rhythmic dances like Chungne, Riabu, Takar Ghene, and traditional folk dances like Konyi Bokar and Hoyi Penam are also performed during the festival.
