Gandhian leader Padma Shree awardee Shakuntala Chaudhary passed away last night at the age of 102.

The prominent personality was reportedly unwell for the last few days.

The cremation of Shakuntala Chaudhary will be held at the Navagraha crematorium, Guwahati after a tribute ceremony at the Kasturba Ashram.

Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta and Education Minister Ranoj Pegu will offer tributes to the mortal remains of Shakuntala Chaudhary on behalf of the Assam Government.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma condoled her demise. Taking to Twitter Chief Minister Sarma wrote, “Deeply anguished at the passing away of veteran Gandhian and Padma Shri Shakuntala Choudhary. Her life was devoted to selfless service, truth, simplicity and non-violence at Sarania Ashram, Guwahati where Mahatma Gandhi had stayed in 1946. My prayers for her sadgati Om Shanti!”

 Shakuntala Choudhary passes away

Notably, Shakuntala Chaudhary spent a large portion of her life at the Kasturba Ashram, since 1947.

Born in 1920, Shakuntala Chaudhary was primarily associated with the Kasturba Trust and had taken the ideals of Mahanta Gandhi across the northeast, particularly to Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya.

On January 26, the Government of India had conferred the prestigious Padma Shree award to Shakuntala Chaudhary.
