Meghalaya’s wait for the Lokayukta is finally about to end, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has assured. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday informed that the selection committee has appointed the chairman of the Lokayukta.

Although Conrad Sangma did not give out the name of the Chairman stating that the minutes of the meeting are yet to be signed and only after it is signed, the name will be revealed today.

He further said that the chairman was appointed following a letter by the Supreme Court directing the State Government to appoint the chairman at the earliest. It may be recalled that the apex court on April 19 heard the pending case and directed Meghalaya as well as the other states to complete the process at the earliest.

Speaking about the other members of the Lokayukta, Conrad said that research would be done before the expansion. Out of the four appointed members of the Lokayukta, two would be from the judiciary.

As per the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act, the chairperson of the Lokayukta will be an individual who is or has been a Chief Justice of the High Court or an eminent person who fulfills the eligibility of having an impeccable integrity and knowledge of the anti-corruption policy, public administration, vigilance, finance including insurance and banking, law and management with at least 25 years of experience.
