Scottish movie legend Sean Connery, who shot to international stardom for his portrayal of British agent James Bond and went on to dominate the silver screen for four decades, has passed at the age of 90 on Saturday.

The makers of James Bond franchise confirmed the news of Connery’s demise via Twitter, “Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90. He was the first actor to play James Bond on the big screen in Dr. No in 1962, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever followed.”

James Bond film producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli also mourned the demise of Sean Connery.

A statement posted on the film’s Twitter handle read, “We are devastated by the news of the passing of Sir Sean Connery. He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words — “The name’s Bond… James Bond” — he revolutionised the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent. He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him.”

Connery’s decades-long acting career had brought him several awards and recognitions. He was knighted by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in the year 2000.

In 1988, Sean Connery won the prestigious Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in ‘The Untouchables’. Apart from taking home an Oscar, Sean Connery had won numerous awards spanning over 50 decades. He has to his credit two Bafta awards and three Golden Globes.

Sir Sean Connery was last seen in ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ in 2003, post which he reportedly quit acting.

He will be remembered first as British agent 007, the character created by novelist Ian Fleming and immortalized by Connery in films starting with Dr. No in 1962.
