The Supreme Court on Tuesday has asked the Election Commission to clarify about the action to be taken regarding the names in the electoral roll.
The apex court specifically asked the EC about the action for those names which are in the electoral roll but not in the Assam NRC to be published on July 31.
The SC made the observation while hearing the pleas of one Gopal Seth and other petitioners demanding voting rights in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections for those names which are not in the draft NRC.
The bench comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta, told the Election Commission to file an affidavit stating that the name of Gopal Seth and other petitioners’ names were not deleted from the electoral list of Assam.
It is noteworthy that in the hearing the Secretary of Election Commission told the bench that the NRC and the electoral rolls are separate lists.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to furnish by March 28 details of the addition and deletion of names in electoral rolls between January 1, 2018 and January 1, 2019.
