Rs 380 lakh spent in aid for Myanmar refugees by Mizoram Government: HM Lalchamliana

The Mizoram government have spent Rs 380 lakhs in providing aid and assistance to the refugees in the state from Myanmar who fled the country to escape the violence in Myanmar. This was stated by Home Minister Lalchamliana at Assembly Session yesterday.

In response to the queries made by opposition leader Lalduhoma and Congress member C. Ngunlianchunga and Lalrindika Ralte, Home Minister Lalchamliana said that the central government is sanctioning funds to the state while the state is helping the refugees.

In his statement, Lalchamliana also said that as per the government records till February 12, 2022, a total of 24,289 refugees have entered Mizoram fleeing the Myanmar Military’s violence meted out to them.

Out of these refugees, a total of 9,033 are currently sheltered in a relief camp set up for them by the government and various NGOs, while 15,256 refugees are taking shelter in a rented house or their relatives and friends.

The Mizoram Home Minister also stated that the refugees are being sheltered in various districts of Mizoram, with the highest population being 8,381 in Siaha district, 5,925 in Champhai District and 5,409 in Langtlai district.

The Home Minister further stressed on the expenses in aiding the refugees.

He said that Rs 380 lakhs have been disbursed to aid and assist the refugees through the offices of the District Commissioners and the funds are being used for setting up a relief camp, electricity for the camps, water storage tanks, construction of toilets, food, medicines, clothes and beddings.

Lalchamliana further stated that the record made by Mizoram is 24,289 and it is almost a month old.

According to various Refugee Relief Committees, the total number of Myanmarese refugees is believed to be around 30,000 with the new refugees arriving in and around Zokhawthar.
