The Himalayan state tucked away in northeast India in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas has seen a record number of tourists visit the state with a record breaking 5 lakh tourists visiting the state in just 15 days.
According to industry experts, if this trend continues then the state might end up hosting 25-30 lakh tourists by this year end.
Because of the very high tourist inflow, most of the tourist spots across the state have been overcrowd. Despite the Tourism Department limiting permits to 800 vehicles only every day, at least 3000 vehicles were spotted at Changu Lake and Baba Mandir.
The Sikkim government has not allowed the movement of tourists to Lachen. Despite that every day over 5000 vehicles went to Lachen area, tour and cab operators said.
Tourists are facing issues with availability of water, taxis, lodging, and drinking water because of the surge in the tourist influx. The tourism department is now working towards address these issues.
In view of the explosion in tourists’ footfall, Sikkim Chief Secretary held a meeting with officials of the Tourism Department to discuss rationalising vehicle permits and ways to ensure safety and security of the tourists amid the rush.
