Following a major earthquake that struck Assam’s Sonitpur on Wednesday, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has instructed the senior government officials to talk with countries like Japan for installing an Earthquake Warning System in the State.

Chairing a meeting with the senior officers in Guwahati on Thursday, CM Sonowal urged them to create mass awareness on how to co-exist with earthquakes and disseminate necessary information through different media platforms.

“I have asked officials to talk with countries like Japan for installation of an Earthquake Warning System in Assam, urged them to create mass awareness on how to co-exist with earthquakes and disseminate information regarding Do’s & Don’ts through popular broadcast mediums,” Sonowal tweeted.

He also urged the officials to prepare a damage assessment report of all the buildings affected by the earthquake.

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale jolted Assam on Wednesday morning. The earthquake originated in Sonitpur and tremors were felt across the state, North Bengal and other parts of the Northeast.

As many as 19 aftershocks have hit Assam within 24 hours, as per data shown by the National Center of Seismology (NCS). The tremors ranged from 2.3 to 4.7 magnitude.
