This initiative is part of the 'Digitalisation of Handloom Project in NER, a pilot project by NEHHDC

In an innovative step, QR codes will now be integrated into the fabric to carry information about the authenticity of unique handloom products from the Northeast region. This initiative is part of the ‘Digitalisation of Handloom Project in NER,’ a pilot project by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC).

The NEHHDC has introduced an IoT (Internet of Things) device into handlooms, which will generate QR codes on handloom products from the Northeast. The goal is to benefit 10,000 active looms in the region, making it easier to trace the product’s journey and provide consumers with information about its origin and authenticity.

A spokesperson from NEHHDC said, “This project brings in technology with QR codes, allowing us to confirm the authenticity of each product at any point in its journey through the supply chain.”

This technology not only verifies handloom products but also captures and analyzes the motion of each loom to identify whether it’s a handloom or not. It employs a combination of IoT and AI (Artificial Intelligence) for this purpose.

“When a buyer scans the QR code, they will learn about the product’s origin, the type of yarn used, and even view a short video showing how that specific product was woven by a particular weaver,” added the spokesperson.

Funded by the North Eastern Council, this initiative aims to modernize the handloom industry in the Northeast by combining modern technology with traditional craftsmanship.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited the NEHHDC stall at the NE-Volution event in New Delhi and interacted with an artisan from Meghalaya who benefits from this digitization project. This highlights the importance of preserving and promoting the rich heritage of handloom craftsmanship in the Northeast while ensuring traceability and authenticity through digital means.
