BK Hrangkhawl will continue to lead the party as its President, while Debbarma will serve the party in the capacity of a party member and warrior

Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma, on Sunday stepped down as the party Chairman as his two year term ended and said in a social media post that he would not be seeking a re-appointment. He further mentioned that as per the amended constitution of the party the President of the party would head the party as its supremo. He would continue to work as a party member and a ‘warrior’ for the betterment of the Tiprasa people.

“As my 2-year term as the Chairman of the #TIPRA Motha Party comes to an end, I am no longer seeking reappointment, and as per our amended constitution, the President shall be the supreme steering post in the party. Hon’ble BK Hrangkhawl will continue to lead the party as the President of #TIPRA Motha, and I will now be serving the party as a party member and a warrior!”, read the statement.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the party and the community, Debbarma emphasized his disavowal of family politics. He made it clear that no member of his family would be assuming any position within the organization. Instead, he urged everyone to work for the movement and prioritize unity.

“I thank everyone for giving me the opportunity to serve the party and the community. I don’t believe in family politics; hence, no member of my family will be taking any post in the organisation. Let’s work for the movement and not individual positions.

Remember, #Thansa (Unity) is a must!” added the statement.

Earlier in the day, during the TIPRA Motha Party’s first plenary session, Debbarma articulated the need for relief from his post. He emphasized that his fight was not solely for the TIPRA Motha Party but for the betterment of the Tiprasa people. Acknowledging his inability to oversee daily affairs and resolve internal issues among leaders, he called for self-accountability within the party.

While addressing the plenary session, Debbarma cautioned party members about attempts to sow discord within the party and the Tiprasa community. He claimed that individuals were offering money and posts to fracture the unity (thangsa) within the party. Debbarma went on to urge elected members of the TTAADC (Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council) to be prepared and, if necessary, submit their resignations to the governor as a form of protest. He cited the inadequate allocation of only 2.7 per cent of the budget for the district council and the failure to conduct Village Council elections by the state government.

Debbarma made it unequivocally clear that he would not compromise with the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in the state. He accused the BJP of attempting to divide the Tiprasa community based on factors such as language, script, religion, and more. He sternly warned the leaders of the ruling party against such actions, vowing to take tough action if the community were subjected to division.
